No Lost Ideas

Juliet Jessop, July 2016

Last month, I said that I’d be trying David Allen's method for 'Getting Things Done'.

This has been working really well for me - for the first time in ages, I feel that I’m powering through a lot of stuff! I finally have a system that doesn't let things fall off the edge and disappear, so I can start to relax.

Well, almost...

Despite recording and organising all of my obvious tasks, there are still other items whizzing around in my head without any obvious tasks arising from them.

I need to take a step back and get ALL of my thoughts into my 'system' - I think I’ve been under-using the 'someday, maybe' category.

David's book comes with a set of productivity cards designed to provoke thought. Serendipitously, the first one I drew was 'No Lost Ideas!'

By recording all of my ideas, I can then park them, which is a great relief.

And I then also know where to find them again when I need them. Here at the IMA, we have the 'research bucket' which we drop ideas into as and when they appear - we can then go back through at a later date to sift through.

So, this month's tip is to ensure that you (and your Insight team) have a central place that captures everything, at whatever stage it's reached. You can then organise and proceed in a calm and controlled way, without any worrying about what you might have forgotten.
