Frequently asked questions

Q: What's the difference between the Insight team workshops and Insight team essentials?

A: The Insight team workshops are 4-hours long, and focus on the mindset and behaviour that have helped corporate Insight professionals to be successful. They focus on core Insight management topics like consultancy skills, commercial thinking, influence and communication, and are relevant to every client-side analyst, researcher or Insight manager.

By contrast, the Insight team essentials are 1-2 hours long, and they are positioned as team discussions rather than formal training. They focus on topics that have been discussed with Insight leaders at our forums, and we're now making them available to Insight teams to help them explore how each topic could apply to their organisation.

Q: Why do we offer some Insight team essentials as 1-hour or 2-hour sessions?

A: We've selected the topics for our Essentials based on their topicality and their importance to Insight team development, so we want to make them available and affordable for as many Insight teams as possible. The key principles we cover are the same regardless of the length of the session, but the longer the session, the more opportunity there is to discuss how your Insight team could adopt and adapt aspects of best practice in your organisation.

We're always happy to advise on the advantages or disadvantages of allowing 1 hour or 2 for a particular topic, and there are some modules where we think that 2 hours is best to really get the most out of the discussion. But we try to be flexible and offer shorter or longer sessions where we can.

Q: Which core topics should I choose first?

A: If you're not sure which core topics to choose first, IMA members might want to complete our free 9-minute Transforming Insight survey to see how your Insight team compares to our benchmark. We encourage all our corporate members to complete this survey once a year.

Q: Do I have to sign up for a corporate membership before I can book training?

A: No, the Transforming Insight programme is available to members and non-members, but corporate members receive a 33% discount and Tier 1 members have 600 credits included in their annual membership.

Q: Is it best to book the core topics as team workshops or open workshops ?

A: If you have at least 6 team members you might want to book the workshop for your team (up to 15 people per workshop), but, subject to demand, we will also arrange open workshops on which you can reserve up to 5 individual places. The benefit of team workshops is that we can answer questions about the application of the principles to your organisation, the benefit of open workshops is that participants can interact with those from other organisations and sectors.

To make the workshops fully interactive for everyone, we ask that all participants join using their own laptop rather than sit in the same room with a shared screen.

Q: Are all modules run online?

A: All our team development modules have been designed for online delivery using Zoom. We find this the most effective platform for delivering best practice content, two-way discussions, and virtual break out rooms, ensuring we can provide participants with the optimal learning experience. Please note that participants do not need their own Zoom account but we ask for cameras to be switched on and every participant uses their own laptop.

Q: Can the IMA provide face-to-face team development or present at a team meeting I have organised in our office?

A: If your Insight team is based in the UK, then subject to availability, precise location and topic, we will try to support you with in person training or sessions delivered at in person team meetings. But we would be grateful if you could discuss the options with us well in advance so that we can check availability and provide you with a bespoke quote for the costs.

Q: Is there any limit to how many workshops my team can attend?

A: We offer our Tier 1 members one 4-hour workshop or two 2-hour team sessions per term. We would recommend that other members and non-members follow the same guideline to ensure that participants have chance to read reference material and put the learning from one session into practice before embracing another topic.

Q: Do you offer 121 support?

A: Yes, we can offer support to individuals or small groups on any of our core topics, but we would always ask you to attend the formal sessions first as the coaching will be less effective if you have not already been introduced to the principles and frameworks.

Q: Do participants receive video recordings of the workshops or copies of the slides used?

A: No, to respect GDPR regulations and protect our own intellectual property, we do not offer video recordings of our workshops. Nor do we share the slides, as the format we use in workshops is highly visual and designed to illustrate the points we’re discussing.

However, we do provide a wide range of Insight leader guides and videos covering all our main workshop topics, and you can access these whenever you like if your employer has an IMA membership and you have a licence to access our best practice content. If you do not have a corporate membership, we'll provide PDF summaries so that you always have something to reference afterwards.

Q: My organisation has a Tier 1 membership, can I roll over unused credits from one year to another?

A: We always ask our members to use all their credits to book team development during their membership year, to ensure that we have the resources in place to support all our members on the topics in which they’re interested. However, on request, we can roll over up to 200 credits from one membership year to the next membership year.
